Cat survives crossbow bolt through neck

A handsome tabby cat narrowly escaped death after cruel thugs in a quiet Herefordshire village used him for target practice.

The owner of five-year-old Puccini was shocked to discover a 15-inch crossbow bolt through the cat's neck when she heard him battering at the cat flap trying to get in. Puccini was rushed to the vet and although the injury looked severe, amazingly, the bolt had passed through the scruff of the neck missing all major arteries. Within days of the bolt being removed, the courageous cat was back home enjoying a bit of TLC.

The RSPCA and local police have condemned the attack, which could easily have been fatal.

"Sadly, assaults on animals are very common," said RSPCA spokesperson Becky Hawkes. "There is just no excuse for taking potshots at animals for target practice - people using these weapons irresponsibly can cause a great deal of harm. It is also illegal to cause animals unnecessary suffering."

Luckily, Puccini recovered fully from the injury

The RSPCA needs your support to help animals like Stanley. Someone deliberately cut off this tiny pup's ears in an effort to make him look more aggressive. Stanley has now been rehomed to someone who will take good care of him.

The RSPCA is a registered charity and receives no State or lottery funding. They rely totally on voluntary donations and help from people like you to undertake our vital welfare work.

Your generosity could mean the difference between life and death to an injured, sick or neglected animal. There are lots of ways you can help them - by giving them your time, money or even just registering on the site to become an online supporter.

Whatever you decide to do, you can be sure it will help the thousands of animals, like Stanley, that rely on the RSPCA every year. Thank you.
